Agadir is a city in southwest Morocco. The
city is located on the shore of the Atlantic
Ocean. Agadir is an important fishing and
commercial port. It is also a famous seaside
resort with a long sandy beach.
Algeria borders Morocco to the east and
southeast though the border between the two
countries has been closed since 1994. There
are also four Spanish enclaves on the
Mediterranean coast: Ceuta, Melilla, Peñón
de Vélez de la Gomera, Peñón de Alhucemas,
and the Chafarinas islands, as well as the
disputed islet Perejil. Off the Atlantic
coast the Canary Islands belong to Spain,
whereas Madeira to the north is Portuguese.
To the north, Morocco is bordered by and
controls part of the Strait of Gibraltar,
giving it power over the waterways in and out
of the Mediterranean sea. The Rif mountains
occupy the region bordering the Mediterranean
from the north-west to the north-east. The
Atlas Mountains run down the backbone of the
country, from the south west to the north
east. Most of the south east portion of the
country is in the Sahara Desert and as such
is generally sparsely populated and
unproductive economically. Most of the
population lives to the north of these
mountains, while to the south is the desert.
To the south, lies the Western Sahara, a
former Spanish colony that was annexed by
Morocco in 1975 (see Green March). Morocco
claims that the Western Sahara is part of its
territory and refers to that as its Southern
Provinces.

Marrakech fut fondée en 454 de l'Hégire,
correspondant à l'an 1062 de l'ère
chrétienne par Youssef Ibn Tachfin, premier
souverain de la dynastie Almoravide.
Très vite, Marrakech, sous l'impulsion des
Almoravides, hommes pieux et austères, de
nombreuses mosquées et médersas (écoles de
théologie coranique) furent construites,
ainsi qu'un centre commercial pour le Maghreb
et l'Afrique noire. Marrakech grandit
rapidement et s'imposa comme un centre
culturel et religieux influent, des remparts
sont également édifiés pour protéger la
ville.
La ville, fut ensuite fortifiée par le fils
de Youssef Ibn Tachfin, Ali Ben Youssef, par
la construction de remparts sur plusieurs
kilomètres, l'architecture de la ville a
été influencée par l'Espagne musulmane.
En 1147, les Almohades, partisans d'un Islam
pur et dur s'emparèrent de l'enceinte de
ville, les derniers Almoravides exterminés,
la presque totalité des monuments détruits.
Les Almohades construisirent de nombreux
palais et édifices religieux, comme par
exemple, la célèbre mosquée de la
Koutoubia construite sur les ruines d'un
palais almoravide.
Afin d'alimenter la palmeraie et les grands
jardins, un système d'irrigation fut
perfectionné. Marrakech, par rayonnement
culturel attira de nombreux écrivains et
artistes, venus notamment d'Andalousie.
En 1269, Marrakech fut conquise par les
nomades mérinides aux dépens des derniers
Almohades. Lorsque survient l'avènement de
la dynastie Mérinide, Marrakech tomba alors
dans une certaine léthargie, et son déclin
entraîna la perte de son statut de capitale
au profit de sa grande rivale, Fès.
Au début du XVIe siècle, Marrakech
redevient la capitale du royaume, atteint
rapidement son apogée, en particulier grâce
au sultan Saadien, Mohammed El Mahdi. De part
la fortune amassée par les sultans,
Marrakech fut embellie, les monuments en
ruine alors restaurés et de somptueux palais
édifiés.
Marrakech va de nouveau perdre son statut de
capitale.
À la fin du XVIIe siècle, l'actuelle
dynastie Alaouite succéda aux Saadiens. Le
trône est successivement transféré à Fès
puis à Meknès, nouvelle ville impériale.
Au début du XXe siècle, Marrakech connaît
quelques années de guerres civiles.
En 1912, l'instauration du protectorat
français au Maroc met fin à cette anarchie.
En 1956, le retour d'exil du roi Mohammed V
sera fêté à Marrakech comme dans le reste

Marrakech or Marakesh (مراكش Murrakush),
known as the "Red City or Al Hamra," is a
city in southwestern Morocco in the foothills
of the Atlas Mountains. One of the possible
origin of its name could be from the
Tamazight (Berber) words mur (n) akuch, which
means Land of God. (The root "mur" is
nowadays in the Berber languages only used in
the feminine form "tamurt"). The same word
"mur/mawr" appears in the country Mauritania,
but this interpretation is still unproven to
this day, and there are other possibilities
which are often invoked. The name Morocco
itself derives from Murrakush. This city is
located at 31°37′60″N, 8°0′0″W and
is the capital of the Marrakech-Tensift-El
Haouz region. Marrakech has the largest
traditional market (souk) in Morocco and also
has the busiest square in the entire
continent of Africa, called Djemaa el Fna.
Like many North African and Middle Eastern
cities, Marrakech has two main divisions: the
old city (médina) and the modern city.
Marrakesch wurde 1062 von Yusuf ibn Taschfin
(1009-1106), dem Führer der Almoraviden,
einer Berberdynastie, deren Heere später
Andalusien eroberten, gegründet. Taschfin
eroberte das heutige Nordmarokko und
Andalusien und ließ Marrakesch zur
Hauptstadt seines Reiches ausbauen. Unter
seinem Sohn Ali Ben Youssouf wurde die Stadt
erheblich erweitert und die bis heute
erhaltene Stadtmauer errichtet. Die
Almohaden, eine religiöse Bewegung, die sich
unter der Führung Ibn Tumarts gegen die
Almoraviden gebildet hatte, eroberten unter
dessen Nachfolger Abd el Moumen im 12.
Jahrhundert Nordmarokko und schließlich im
Jahre 1147 Marrakesch. Sie zerstörten
religiöse wie Profanbauten als Symbole der
Almoraviden. Unter der Regentschaft der
Almohaden wurde die Koutoubia-Moschee
errichtet.
Nach bürgerkriegsartigen
Auseinandersetzungen um die Macht in Marokko
nahmen schließlich die Meriniden 1269
Marrakesch ein. Der Sieger Abou Youssouf
Yakoub gab schließlich Marrakesch als
Hauptstadt zugunsten von Fes auf. Unter den
Saaditen wurde Marrakesch von 1554 an dann
vorübergehend erneut marokkanische
Hauptstadt. Unter der nachfolgenden Dynastie
der Alaouiten, der auch das heutige
Herrscherhaus entstammt, wurde erneut Fes
Regierungssitz.
