Belonging to Sufism, the confraternity
Hmadcha was Founded in the seventeenth
century by Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch. Proponents
of this guild practicing asceticism
Individual and collective enliven a ritual,
featuring several phases during which the
successive invocations of Allah, the Prophet
Sidna Mohammed, poems sung and litanies. The
final phase of leads to ritual dances and
ecstatic trances. The Hmadcha use a large and
a small tambourine to Slender cup (Harraz,
Taârija), a double drum membrane (T'bal), an
oboe (Ghaïta) and a flute (Layra).
