This is a short video of our engineer powering up
and fondling my Hewlett-Packard 2114B
minicomputer.
Built in 1969, the 2114B uses a 16-bit derivative
PDP-8 architecture, as do all of HP's earliest
systems. Its technology consists of SSI TTL, DTL
and CTL integrated circuits, and ferrite core
memory. The 2114B is perhaps the most refined of
HP's first-generation systems, with its relatively
compact chassis and DMA capability.
The 2114B operates at 8 MHz and has a full 16-bit
bus. This particular example is equipped with 4kw
x 16 bits of Ampex ferrite core memory, barely
visible at the rear left of the unit. The card
cage is also visible, and contains the ALU,
instruction decoder, shift register, timing
generator and core sense amplifiers.
Several years ago, I retrofitted the incandescent
front panel lamps with yellow LED substitutes that
produce a very authentic light without the need
for periodic replacement. The 2114 front panel
requires 63 lamps, and is unique in its use of
illuminated proximity-sense touch switches.

This is a follow-up to our previous 2114B video,
which shows the internals of the system in close
detail. This computer has been upgraded with
12598A Memory Parity Check with Interrupt and
12618A Synchronous Data Set Interface Kit.
Components shown include the card cage, Ampex
4kword ferrite core memory module, memory bus
wiring, timing generator card, driver/switch card,
backplane wiring and the power supply.

The stuff on the scope display is a binary value
readout being fed to it XY-style from the 1607A.
Clearly I forgot to adjust the horizontal scale
before I shot the video. The 5245L is counting
clock pulses from the 8016A, and the 5326A is just
running in test mode. There's also a very nice
Data I/O 29B EPROM programmer with the GangPak
8-chip batch module, hidden in the shadows next to
the word generator. The clear media boxes on the
shelf are full of tubes...dekatrons, beam
switching tubes, argon lasers, klystrons, no
boring radio tube chaff.
Unfortunately, the coolest equipment in the room
isn't shown in the video. There are two HP
minicomputers on the shelf beneath the 4955A: a
2114B and a 21MX-M series (2108B to be specific).
With a few exceptions, the equipment in my lab was
manufactured between about 1955 and 1975. Older
stuff won't do what I need it to do, and the newer
stuff is definitely not of the same
apocalypse-rated construction as the vintage
models. Vintage HP is truly the pinnacle of the
lost art of electronics, immaculately engineered
both inside and out. HP printed circuit boards are
things of beauty.
The HP of the Cold War era is now long gone, torn
apart and mutated into little more than a
glorified inkjet cartridge distributor. The
zombified, telecom-saturated husk of the HP test
equipment division lives on as Agilent, but
equipment of this caliber will never be built
again.
