| Baby Whale Faces Starvation |

ANCHOR:
Chances of rescuing an abandoned whale calf, off
the coast of Australia, are becoming slimmer by
the day. Failed attempts to lure it back to open
waters are worrying wildlife authorities.
The calf was first spotted on Monday, swimming too
close to a moored yacht, which it may have adopted
as its mum.
New South Wales Wildlife rangers towed the yacht
into open waters, trying to get the baby to
follow. By doing that, they were hoping to
increase the chances of the calf finding a
lactating female to nurse from.
But on Tuesday, it was spotted again, swimming
beside another yacht.
[Chris McIntosh, Wildlife Ranger]:
"Unless it can get nourishment its chances are
really poor."
Baby whales cannot survive more than a few days
without milk. But this humpback baby hasn't
anything to eat for at least five days, now. If it
fails to find a foster mother whale by Thursday,
it will most likely die.
[John Dengate, Wildlife Ranger]:
"At the moment we'll be trying to monitor the baby
whale's condition. And if we can get a blood
sample, we'll do that. And of course if we can
lure it back out to sea, that's something we'll be
trying as well. At the end of the day it can
communicate with the passing whale pods anyway and
if a mother whale does come past that is suitable,
maybe they can get together."
Every year one or two baby whales are found washed
ashore. Tags : ntd baby whale starvation australia wildlife |
