The Devil's Crayon sees Tom Fleming swap vocals
duties with usual lead singer Hayden Thorpe. With
its refrain of "We are so many tiny pieces" and
Tom's yearning delivery, the song shimmers in
widescreen around a sense of location, melody and
wonder at the scale of things. The Devil's Crayon
sounds like the theme song to a new kind of very
English, (probably un-filmable) road movie.

| Wild Beasts - 'Assembly' |

Assembly is an initiation, is a palm spat on and
shook. Wild
Beasts' debut release on Domino is an absolutely
joyous non-stop knee jerk expression of everything
and anything forced through in a fully breached
frenzy lasting less than three minutes. Like the
traditional school hymn projected ten foot tall on
the cement wall, but belted out bugger drunk in a
backward Bethlehem, assembly is an unabashed
assault on the middle
ground.

| The mark of the Beast |

According to the Scriptures, the "mark of the
beast" is received on the right hand or forehead.
With modern technology, it is very possible that
this mark may be directly linked with a computer
chip. But regardless if it is or isn't, everyone
who is living immediately before the return of
Christ will be forced to take this mark in order
to buy or sell anything:
"He also forced everyone, small and great,
rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark
on his right hand or on his forehead so that no
one could buy or sell unless he had the mark,
which is the name of the beast or the number of
his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has
insight, let him calculate the number of the
beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666"
(Rev. 13:16-18).
But this mark, which will be universally issued
around the entire world, MUST NOT be received
under any circumstances, even by Christians!
Scripture goes on to say:
"A third angel followed them and said in a
loud voice: 'If ANYONE worships the beast and his
image and receives his mark on the forehead or on
the hand, he, too, will drink of the wine of God's
fury, which has been poured full strength into the
cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with
burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels
and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment
rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or
night for those who worship the beast and his
image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his
name. This calls for patient endurance on the part
of THE SAINTS who obey God's commandments and
remain faithful to Jesus' " (Rev. 14:9-12).

The devil's Crayon est tout simplement l'un des
morceaux de l'année. Imparable, entrainant et
avec les deux voix les plus improbables depuis
bien longtemps dans la pop rock.
Wild Beasts n'a pas à se forcer pour être hors
du commun, ils ont juste à être eux mêmes.
Quand vous sortez de la session et qu'une bonne
partie de la pièce d'à coté s'est arrêté de
travailler pour écouter à travers la porte ce
qui est en train de se passer, cela ne fait que
confirmer que l'on ne vient pas d'halluciner, mais
de se prendre une bonne claque musicale...
Alors jetez vous sur The devil's crayon et ses
petites sœurs...
Après cette session hors du commun musicalement
et à l'écoute de leur album on ne révait que
d'une seule chose : savoir ce que les Wild Beasts
peuvent donner sur scène : cela sera possible Ã
