| Elizabeth Croydon- Medical Marijuana (Comedy) |
 |
Hi. Allow me to share my first appearance at The
World Famous Comedy Store opening for Joe Rogan,
Ngaio Bealum and emceed by Mr. Howard Dover. The
Green Eyed ladies are the Hot saucy b*tches I am
referring to.... But I think Joe Rogan is Hotter.
I was knighted a Master Debater by National
Lampoon in the name of animal House's 25th
anniversary.... For the record .... I am not
certain per say if my blood father, an honored DC
police officer smoked medical marijuana, but if
you started three rugby leagues and your nic name
was Doc Doom -- you'd want special brownies too.
That's all I'm saying. Radical Humor makes a
difference. Incidentally, starting this year... I
will attempt to make an appearance every Fourth of
July Smoke In. smoke-in.org greentherapy.org

| John Betjeman: Hymn & Croydon |
 |
For my friend Bob in America, here is 'Hymn' with
the addition of 'Croydon' both by Betjeman. With a
little rambling about the grevious state of
affairs in English town architecture from yours
truly. The opening music is Jack Hylton's 'She
Shall Have Music'.
Hymn
The Church's Restoration
in eighteen-eighty-three
has left for contemplation
not what there used to be.
How well the ancient woodwork
looks round the Rect'ry hall,
memorial of the good work
of him who plann'd it all.
He who took down the pew-ends
and sold them anywhere
but kindly spared a few ends
work'd up into a chair.
O worthy persecution
of dust! O hue divine!
O cheerful substitution,
thou varnished pitch-pine!
Church furnishing! Church furnishing!
Sing art and crafty praise!
He gave the brass for burnishing
he gave the thick red baize,
he gave the new addition,
pull'd down the dull old aisle,
- to pave the sweet transition
he gave th'encaustic tile.
Of marble brown and veined
he did the pulpit make;
he order'd windows stained
light red and crimson lake.
Sing on, with hymns uproarious,
ye humble and aloof,
look up! and oh how glorious
he has restored the roof!
Croydon
In a house like that
your Uncle Dick was born;
satchel on back he walked to Whitgift
every weekday morn.
Boys together in Coulsdon woodlands,
bramble-berried and steep,
he and his pals would look for spadgers
hidden deep.
The laurels are speckled in Marchmont Avenue
just as they were before,
but the steps are dusty that still lead up to
your Uncle Dick's front door.
Pear and apple in Croydon gardens
bud and blossom and fall.
but your Uncle Dick has left his Croydon
once for all.

'Whitgift' was the Whitgift School, a lovely old
building set in extensive grounds; later pulled
down and the hideous Whitgift Centre built over
it. Coulsdon woodlands are still there, and very
beautiful they are, just outside the town centre.
We used to go walking there of a Sunday and the
place was full of peace. The only references I can
find to 'spadgers' define as a sort of sparrow,
apparently not common. Tags : betjeman hymn croydon english poetry charles bryant coulsdon surrey spoken word whitgift school |
