And finally we come to the main part of the
machine shops job, honing the cylinder walls. It
will do two things. First it will bring the
cylinder walls to the matching diameter of the new
pistons. Second it will leave a cross hatch
pattern of light scratches, to keep oil on the
walls and prevent metal on metal scraping. A dial
bore gauge is used to bring it to the exact spec
needed within 1/10,000th of an inch.

I DID NOT BUILD THIS BIKE. It is a 48 cylinder,
4200cc engine made from s1/kh250 cylinders, by
Simon Whitlock.
"Each motor is basically 8 "s1 /KH250" cylinders
bolted on to cut up standard casings, with a 8 cyl
built up crank, in turn they are bolted to a
housing, gear linked and driven thru a BMW road
bike gearbox, as the bike is pretty long already
it would be difficult to put a transverse drive
thru a gearbox. It has taken almost three years of
hard work and he has overcome some huge problems
to get here - - where do you even start to think
about building a bike like this? . . . Oh, by the
way, Simon is not an engineer of any kind - he
oversees the building of shopping precincts etc
Don't look at it as a bike, look at it as a pure
feat of engineering . . . and Simon built a
Nitrous injected, fuel injected, water cooled,
supercharged H1.
It has a small chainsaw motor under the seat that
is used as the starter motor for the 48 cylinder
motor. "The ignition is 6 x 8cyl E-Type Jaguar
distributers."
"Oh, and not only does it run - but it is rideable
- JUST! - the engine and box alone weight just
over a ton! " Same guy has made several other
multicylinder bikes of different types. Two of
them are in the Barber Motorcycle Museum in
Birmingham Ala. Largest and most complete
motorcycle museum in the world. Look it up at

Engine Run
In 1986 the Bristol Freighter ZK-CPT ('Merchant
Courier') was flown into Omaka Aerodrome
(Blenheim, New Zealand) and retired. The aircraft
engines were subsequently run on several
occasions, but this has not occurred for over 20
years.
Enter Alastair Marshall - ex RNZAF Engine
Technician, now commercial pilot, and a piston
engine enthusiast. Over the past few months, Al
has been working on the two Bristol Hercules
engines on the aircraft, with the goal of getting
the old girl to come to life once more.
On 13th June 2008, Stage 1 of the project was
completed - the port engine was successfully run
for the first time in over two decades. Well, done
that man!
We look forward to Stages Two (starboard engine
run) and Three (a full aircraft taxi) soon!
