Project 120 #8
Middle Eastern Percussion - Mazaj (Chas Whitaker /
Maren Lueg / Carmen Jones)
Darabuka, Soprano Sax
I was in the café and spotted the fantastic
Arabic percussion teacher Chas Whitaker and joined
the queue to talk to him...
I asked if he was willing to contribute something
to camera for the Drum Camp 08 Project 120. He was
really warm to the idea and asked if it was OK if
other people joined him.
20 minutes later, in a completely empty Dance
Tent, I was thrilled to discover that Chas was
joined by flautist Maren and the wonderful Arabic
dancer Carmen Jones - they'd dressed for the part
too!
The requirements were that at least one track,
ideall,y should be at 120. All the pieces they
played were - Chas' superb playing to the
metronome click, to me, is incredibly impressive.
I was really moved by their performances.
There are more videos of them performing at
Glastonbury and the Big Chill and some on BBC
iPlayer if you care to check them out. I get
another chance to see them at WOMAD next week too!
This is El Noam an Iraqi folk tune which happens
to be track 1 from their CD (buy it!)
Thanks to all who contributed
Hope you enjoy
Gary
