 |
http://www.TheTechStop.net
This week on 'gadget' we take a look at the Sansa
Clip from Sandisk, one of the masters of flash
data storage devices. This diminutive player packs
1, 2, or 4 GB of music-storing goodness, a digital
FM tuner, onboard EQ, voice recorder, and a 1"
OLED color screen into a package that is about the
size of a small matchbox. The Clip supports MP3,
WMA, Protected WMA, and Audible files, as well as
the Rhapsody Music subscription service for those
who want an "all-you-can-eat" music selection.
With prices starting at $35, the Clip is a great
alternative to a more expensive music player that
lacks the screen and additional features of the
Sansa device. Top it all off with stellar audio
quality, an easy-to-use interface and intuitive
controls, and you have a player that challenges
the iPod Shuffle for dominance of the on-the-go
music market.

| JESUITS - gadget @ TTS -Ep41- DisplayLink -- CES2008 |
 |
USB to VGA adapters have been around for several
years now, but their performance has been a
mixed-bag at best and downright embarrassing at
worst. The few USB-VGA adapters that have passed
through our labs were quickly relegated to a
bottom drawer or unceremoniously returned to
shipper. With poor driver support, awful
performance and terribly image quality, we assumed
that video over USB was impossible.
Then we met the uberGeeks from DisplayLink.
These brainy engineers have come up with a way to
deliver full-motion, high-quality images and video
over a USB 2.0 connection. With up to 6 adapters
connected to a single computer and DisplayLink
technology making its way into products from
several major manufacturers, your multiple monitor
setup might be driven by USB.

| JESUITS - gadget @ TTS -EP63- Pharos GPS Trips and Pics |
 |
http://www.thetechstop.net/?page_id=928
Are you adrift in a sea of digital pictures?
--- If so, you need to take a look at the Pharos
"Trips and Pics" -- a GPS 'geotagging' system that
might be the ultimate in vacation photo
collecting.
The Pharos Trips & Pics is a self-contained
geotagging package complete with GPS receiver,
battery and interface software. About the size of
two stacked matchboxes, the Trips and Pics is
small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and light
enough (only .15 lbs) to be hung around your neck.
Pharos is known for high-quality GPS devices and
the Trips and Pics is no exception. The GPS
receiver has an integrated patch antenna, 20
channel tracking and a 24 hour battery. It also
has enough memory to log up to 45 days worth of
GPS fixes.
Trips and Pics is compatible with any digital
camera and the software will automatically tag
each picture, placing them on your map of choice.
-- We used it with Google earth and were rewarded
with a visual representation not only of our
travels, but of the location of each and every
single on of our photos.
Since it uses the time stamp of the photos and
compares them against the time stamp of the GPS
receiver log entries, each picture is placed on
the map exactly where it was taken. The end result
was that we had a fantastically detailed map of
our path around the island, and a neatly organized
trip photo album. If we wanted to, we could share
this album with the world, or just with our
friends --- This changes the paradigm of the
family photo album.

| JESUITS - 'gadget' @ TTS -Ep66- QNAP Turbo Station 209 |
 |
http://www.thetechstop.net/?page_id=932
Are you a geek without an uberGeek storage box? If
so, QNAP wants to cure you of your NAS blues.
On this episode of 'gadget' we take a look at the
QNAP TS-209, a Network Attached Storage Box that
gives you a two-drive, hot-Swappable, SATA RAID
array in a stylish, and quiet enclosure. It
features a 500Mhz CPU, 128MB of DDRII System
Memory, 8MB of Flash for the operating system, a
single Gigabit Ethernet port, and three USB 2.0
connectors (two in the back and one in the front.)
The 209 in based on a Linux OS and supports
Windows and Mac clients and has integrated support
for all the sharing goodness that is expected from
a modern NAS box.
Where the 209 leaves the realm of the standard and
enters the world of the uberGeek is in its
integrated support for dynamic web serving, PHP
code execution, and MySQL databases. -- That's
right, this hobbit sized box can host your dynamic
web site, log, PHP/MySQL photo album or web forum
entirely on its own.
Even better is the native support for Bit Torrent.
You can now download the latest, greatest and
LEAGAL content without a PC -- simply drop in the
torrent file and wait for your media to finish
downloading.
