Currently, there are thousands of rescue teams in
Sichuan. One of them, is a rescue team from
Tangshan in Mianzhu's Jiulong County. Many of the
members from the team are survivors from the
Tangshan earthquake that happened 32 years ago.
The Tangshan medical team is situated in front of
what's left over in Mianzhu's Jiulong County's
Municipal Government building.
In the temporary tents, medical personnel are busy
tending to the victims.
In Tangshan's earthquake in 1976, Li was only 8
years old. He was rescued after being buried in
the rubble.
This is Li Changjiang the head of Tangshan
People's Hospital Orthopaedics Department.

His sister was also buried in the rubble. It was
the PLA who dug her out and flew her to a Liaoning
hospital. Even though she lost her legs, she
survived afterall. His sister is still receiving
help from the government.
Li Changjiang said, "After hearing about the
Sichuan earthquake, my sister with tears in her
eyes told me 'please go there and return the favor
for me.'"
Li was the first to volunteer to join Tangshan's
medical team after hearing about Sichuan.
Li and his co-workers arrived Wenchuan on the
14th.
As soon as they arrived, Li immediately went to
work. He spoke to victims, and within a short time
in one day, he performed 11 surgeries.
Li Changjiang said, "I hope with my help, people
can re-build their homeland with their own hands
and feet."
Medical team member, Yang hong, lost both his
parents in the Tangshan earthquake. With help from
the government, he finished all his schooling and
got accepted to Hebei's medical school.
After graduating med school, he started working in
Tangshan People's Hospital's Neurosurgery
Department, where his parents used to work.
In 2001, Yanghong studied aboard in the US and
returned in 2005 after denying job offers in the
US.
As soon as he heard about Wenchuan's quake, he
quickly volunteered to serve on the front lines.
Yang Hong, neurosurgery of Tangshan People's
Hospital, said, "The Tangshan earthquake resulted
me never being able to see my parents again. But,
I'm very lucky since the government took such good
care of me."
The oldest of the team members is Tangshan
Hospital's former nurse, Wang Xiurong.
In 1976, she lost 7 relatives in the disaster and
now lives with her only relative- her grandma.
A day before the Wenchuan earthquake, her grandma
got sick and was in the hospital.
With tears in her eyes, she also volunteered to go
to Sichuan.
The elders from the quake constantly remind her of
her grandma and her relatives.
Hu Wanning, member of Tangshan's medical team,
said, "The first medical team only had 40
volunteers, around 3,000 people volunteered. It's
extremely moving. Everyone hoped for an
opportunity to thank the government, the brothers
and sisters who helped them because we are one
family."

Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China
International rescue teams have arrived in
quake-hit areas to assist local disaster relief
efforts. On Friday, rescue teams from Japan, South
Korea, Russia and Singapore arrived in quake-hit
Sichuan's provincial capital Chengdu. They then
headed to some of the worst-hit areas such as
Qingchuan, Shifang and Mianzhu cities to carry out
rescue work.
The Russian cargo plane arrived in Chengdu from
Siberia on Friday afternoon. On board were 51
rescuers, a mobile first-aid unit and four sniffer
dogs. They headed for Mianzhu City.
Earlier, two batches of Russian rescue materials
were sent to China. A group of 38 Russian
specialists will later arrive in China for further
assistance.
The 40-member South Korean rescue team are
experienced, having previously performed relief
work in quake zones in Cambodia, Turkey and
Thailand. Equipped with machines, they will mainly
carry out rescue work in Shifang city.
Head of South Korean rescue team said, "We brought
some advanced life searching equipment, as well as
two sniffer dogs. We, the South Korean central
rescue team, owns some unique rescue technology.
We hope our technology and experience will help to
save more people."
Later on Friday, the 55-member Singaporean rescue
team arrived in the quake zone and headed for
Shifang city to assist rescue efforts.
A second group of 29 Japanese earthquake rescuers
also arrived in Chengdu on Friday afternoon. The
first group of Japanese rescuers carried out
rescue work in Qingchuan County.
The Japanese rescuers say they still hope to find
more survivors.
Head of Japanese rescue team said, "We have a lot
of experience. We can find more survivors trapped
beneath. We have special machines to dig out the
people locked in the ruins."
The first group of 31 well-equipped Japanese
rescuers arrived at Qingchuan, 250 kilometers
northeast of the epicenter, on Friday afternoon.
They were the first foreign rescue team to work in
the quake zone.
The 31 rescuers began searching for three people,
including a mother and her 10-week-old baby,
buried in a collapsed building in Qingchuan.
This is the first time China has accepted foreign
assistance for disaster relief since the People's
Republic of China was founded in 1949.
China had expressed gratitude for the willingness
and offers from other countries to send relief
teams, and for the messages of support and relief
aid.

Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China
Reconstruction of the damaged road to the quake's
epicenter, Wenchuan, had progressed to the county
border by Thursday noon. Communications cables
connecting Wenchuan with other parts of the
country were repaired on Thursday afternoon.
The highway linking Beichuan County with Mianyang
City was re-opened on Thursday morning, allowing
heavy rescue machinery to enter Beichuan. The
Sichuan relief center said more than 60,000
injured people had been rescued in quake-damaged
areas in the Province as of Thursday morning.
In hard-hit Beichuan County, more than 200 injured
were rescued on Wednesday. Relief efforts were
slow due to the rugged mountains and heavily
damaged roads. Rescuers reached the county
Wednesday night. Another strong aftershock jolted
Yingxiu Town in Wenchuan County again.
Rocks rolled down from the hills and some heavily
damaged houses, still standing after Monday's
devastating earthquake, collapsed completely. At
least 270 students were confirmed dead by Thursday
morning at a middle school in Qingchuan County.
A three-storey dormitory collapsed on about 400
students who were taking an afternoon nap when the
earthquake struck. The school has over 850
students. Only 139 students escaped from the
dormitory. Rescuers are still searching for those
missing.
So far, the death toll in Mianzhu City has risen
to 4000. Three towns in the county are still out
of reach. Meanwhile, in downtown Mianzhu,
thousands of residents spend their nights
outdoors, desperately in need of tents, food and
water.
