Multi-Touch Interaction Research,Jeff Han (2006)
While touch sensing is commonplace for single
points of contact, multi-touch sensing enables a
user to interact with a system with more than one
finger at a time, as in chording and bi-manual
operations. Such sensing devices are inherently
also able to accommodate multiple users
simultaneously, which is especially useful for
larger interaction scenarios such as interactive
walls and tabletops.
Since refining the FTIR (frustrated total internal
reflection) sensing technique, we've been
experimenting with a wide variety of application
scenarios and interaction modalities that utilize
multi-touch input information. These go far beyond
the "poking" actions you get with a typical
touchscreen, or the gross gesturing found in
video-based interactive interfaces. It is a rich
area for research, and we are extremely excited by
its potential for advances in efficiency,
usability, and intuitiveness. It's also just so
much fun!
Our technique is force-sensitive, and provides
unprecedented resolution and scalability, allowing
us to create sophisticated multi-point widgets for
applications large enough to accommodate both
hands and multiple users.
The drafting table style implementation shown here
measures 36"x27", is rear-projected, and has a
sensing resolution of better than 0.1" at 50Hz.
Stroke event information is sent to applications
using the lightweight OSC protocol over UDP.

Google Tech Talks
June 9, 2008
ABSTRACT
Multi-touch is a new way of human computer
interaction, which recognizes multiple
simultaneous touch points, as opposed to the
standard touchscreen, which recognizes only one
touch point at a time. There are many forms of
natural input in order to simplify the way people
interact with their PC's and devices, however with
the introduction of Apple iPhone/iPod Touch,
Microsoft Surface and other devices, multi-touch
is becoming more and more popular. In this tech
talk I will describe what is the history behind
multi-touch screens, what kind of multi-touch
devices are available and how do they work,
focusing mostly on FTIR and DI technique. We will
discuss how to receive multi-touch events in our
applications using TUIO protocol and how to write
multi-touch applications using just a simulator.
We will look into available open source projects
that can be used to operate multi-touch screens
and that are being developed by Natural User
Interface Group (NUI Group) community.
Speaker: Pawel Solyga
Pawel Solyga is a computer science student at
Politechnika Wroclawska, Poland. He is a
co-founder of Natural User Interface Group (NUI
Group), whose main areas of interest are modern
user interfaces and in particular mutli-touch
sreens. Pawel is also a former Google Summer of
Code student. For GSoC 2008, he's working as
organization administrator and mentor for the NUI
Group. When not contributing to Open Source
projects, he's a software engineer at Natural User
Interface Europe AB, working on innovative
multitouch applications. Tags : google techtalks techtalk engedu talk talks googletechtalks education |

| MPX multi-touch support |
 |
MPX now supports multi-touch screens. A new type
of event has been added and can be used from touch
applications. Automatic pointer emulation allows
to use any X application. And MPX enables multiple
users to use the desktop simultaneously.

| Iraq signs multi-billion dollar deal with Shell - 23 Sep 08 |
 |
Iraq has signed a multi-billion dollar deal with
oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell, giving the
company access to its natural gas reserves.
The deal is the second between the government and
a foreign firm since the US-led invasion of Iraq
in 2003.
Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports that under
the terms of the deal, Iraq will have 51 per cent
in the venture based in Basra and Shell 49 per
cent.
UPDATE: Since this video was made Shell have
confirmed that the contract does not include a
production sharing agreement. Tags : Nicole Johnston al jazeera english iraq shell oil deal gas royal dutch |
