Animators Lead the Online Video Revolution,
Television Pioneer Fred Seibert
Acclaimed for his work as employee #1 at MTV where
he was creative director and later as president of
MTV Online, president of Hanna Barbara and the
force behind the revitalization of Nickelodeon,
Fred Seibert has been on the forefront of several
chapters in the (r)evolution of television.
These days he's building a diversified network of
community-generated online video programming at a
company called NextNewNetworks. He holds the title
of creative director. In March the company raised
$15 million in a second financing round from
Goldman Sachs and Velocity Interactive.
There are 16 shows. Barely Political is probably
the best know these days, particularly for its
"Obama Girl" sensation.
Fred came by the Beet.TV studios earlier this week
to talk about Channel Federator, the online
network for animators he started some years back.
He explains how animators were the among the first
to embrace the online medium way back in the 90's.
Although just a few thousand animators upload
videos, the clips are getting 3 million monthly
views on the company's site and through extensive
syndication onto many sites including YouTube,
Blip.tv, MySpace, Viddler, etc.
(NextNewNetworks uses TubeMogul, an awesome
service, to syndicate its clips to multiple
sharing sites -- as does Beet.TV)
Fred is busy planning for the company's second
annual animation awards which will take place in
New York on June 4. Check out the nominees and
their really cool work and cast your vote! The
awards event will be presented online on June 10.

Today we learn that Camaros and Cadillacs might
share the same underpinnings, Honda has gone old

Dispatch from Hollywood: Product Placement in
Online Video Works
Here in Hollywood last night, I caught up with
several of the creative leaders in independent
online video. I interviewed Miles Beckett and
Greg Goodfried, producers of lonelygirl15, Tim
Street of French Maid TV and Hayden Black of Good
Night Burbank.
Hollywood As each of these producers seek a
growing audience, they are monetizing their
content through product mentions and placements
integrated into their shows. We will publish
these interviews over the next few days along with
other material from Digital Hollywood.
One of the the biggest creators of online video is
the New York-based NextNewNetworks. The company
has 15 separate episodic programs. They are
extremely popular on YouTube, sometimes
registering as the most popular channel.
Fred Seibert is the creative director of
NextNewNetworks. Fred is a television pioneer who
was the creative director of MTV. He says that his
company is finding success in sponsored
programming.
Since advertising around online video is still in
its infancy and most ads don't travel in viral
videos, making ads part of the content is a
solution that is working well for these
innovators.

Barely Political has Unexpected Hit with Obama
Girl
Ben Relles is the founder and producer of Barely
Political, a spoof on politics which has hit it
big with the Obama Girl sensation. This clip has
had nearly 9 million views on YouTube. Looks like
Obama's progress towards the Presidential
nomination puts Ben on a winning ticket.
Earlier this year, Relles's company was acquired
by NextNewNetworks, a company that is assembling
and launching a number of serialized online video
shows.
I interviewed Ben earlier this week at the
Streaming Media East conference in Manhattan.

Creative Producers will Grab Advertising Dollars
with Original, Sponsored Videos
From small online videos content producers such as
EQAL and NextNewNetworks, to giant ones like
Yahoo!, the marketing messages of sponsors are
being "baked" into original productions. These
messages range from product placements to branded
characters to stories about a particular product
or service.
As online video advertising is in its nascent
stage, sponsored content or "advertorials" are
a big trend and away to make money. This theme was
repeatedly mentioned to me by several independent
producers I spoke with in Hollywood last week. I
will be publishing several of these interviews
over the next few days.
In a sense, Madison Avenue is moving to Hollywood
as the creativity of independent filmmakers is
being sought by marketers who had only relied on
their advertising agencies.
At Digital Hollywood last week, I interviewed the
head of IBM's entertainment and media consulting
group Saul Berman. He talks about the impact of
digital media on the entertainment industry. He
says that Hollywood has to change -- that it has
been way behind the curve relative to other major
industries. Saul references this recently
released study about the imperative of change in
his comments.
