| Quarks: Inside the Atom |
 |
Matter is all the stuff that we see, feel, and
smell around us. By definition, matter has mass
and takes up space. Matter includes substances
such as water, wood, rock, metal, plastic, and
air, as well as countless other materials. All
types of matter are made up of tiny particles
called atoms.
Atoms and the sub-atomic particles they're made of
are far too small to be seen, even with the most
powerful microscope. Despite this, physicists have
developed an understanding of the structure of
these particles through experimentation and
indirect observation. Tags : Quarks Atom science BIG BANG AIG Kent hovind kenn ham |

December 1996: QUARKS came from nowhere and played
their first five songs in a Berlin living room.
march 97: sign a recording deal with monika
enterprise. the debut album comes out in october
97 and is called Zuhause (at home). the people
love QUARKS as much as QUARKS love the people. the
first QUARKS super eight video is shon on viva in
febuary 98 - there is cofee and cake and lots of
QUARKS music (VIVA WAHWAH APRIL 98).
march 98: the MUSIK FÜRS WOHNZIMMER (music for
living rooms) compilation comes out - of course
featuring QUARKS. in september 98 the living room
goes on tour.
QUARKS appear on the most diverse compilations
e.g. ZUR HÖLLE MAMA, STOLZ UND VORURTEIL and also
on a PLUG RESEARCH compilation. the album KÖNIGIN
(Queen) got its name because it was created in
QUARKSLAND and every land needs a queen. the album
was mixed by POLE (Stefan Betke) so it really
sounds royal.
QUARKS music is not dance music - but people dance
to it nevertheless. QUARKS music is electro
acoustic with great attraction and a wonderfully
sung voice.

In particle physics, quarks are one of the two
basic constituents of matter (the other are the
leptons). Quarks are the only fundamental
particles that interact through all four of the
fundamental forces. The word was originally coined
by Murray Gell-Mann as a nonsense word rhyming
with "pork".[1] Later, he found the same word in
James Joyce's book Finnegans Wake, where seabirds
give "three quarks", akin to three cheers
(probably onomatopoetically imitating a seabird
call, like "quack" for ducks, as well as making a
pun on the relationship between Munster and its
provincial capital, Cork) in the passage "Three
quarks for Muster Mark!/Sure he hasn't got much of
a bark/And sure any he has it's all beside the
mark.". Further explanation for the use of the
word "quark" may be derived from the fact that, at
the time, there were only three known quarks in
existence.
Quarks come in six flavours, and their names (up,
down, strange, charm, bottom, and top) were also
chosen arbitrarily based on the need to name them
something that could be easily remembered and
used.

'The Standard Model of particle physics says that
the protons and neutrons of the atomic nucleus are
made from quarks. The forces that bind quarks
together in stable configurations are very
different from the usual electric, magnetic or
gravitational forces we are used to.
One of the strangest properties of these forces is
that it is impossible to remove a single quark
from a proton - if one tries to do this it is like
stretching a spring until there is so much tension
that new particles (such as pions) are created.
These forces are still poorly understood and
require new approaches to studying the nature of
quarks.
One of the most promising approaches is lattice
QCD, which simulates quarks and their interactions
on a discrete space-time lattice. Lattice QCD
calculations require a supercomputer capable of
teraflop (10^12 floating point operations per
second) speeds, which is now available to us at
Massey's HELIX cluster.' Tags : particle physics new zealand science quarks |
