| Ryan Leslie Rehearses "Irina" |
 |
Live music always adds the best twist to a song
that feels good...
Many people have asked about this song - what it
means and why I wrote it.
Here's the answer:
I wrote this song during a very tough time in my
life. My 'Diamond Girl' had just left me. If
you've ever had someone leave you - you know what
I'm talking about. It's very easy during that time
to feel like you're just not "good enough".
Sometimes all it takes is just a nice person to
say "I'm diggin' you", and it can turn your whole
life around - make you feel like you're not all
bad.
"Irina" is about that person, whomever it may be
in your life. Someone that made you feel like you
were worth something again. It could be anyone.
The song's not sexual. The word 'love' doesn't
appear once. It's about the feeling you get when
you know you're making someone happy by just being
yourself.
Sometimes you need that encouragement to
appreciate the person you see in the mirror. I
know I did.
Still miss my girl though.
Enjoy the clip.

| Celibidache Rehearses Bruckner's Ninth |
 |
Music Documentary / 58 min / 2006
Sergiu Celibidache rehearsed Bruckner's ninth
symphony with the Munich Philharmonic for an
extended and intense period. Using previously
unreleased 16mm footage, the film focuses on the
conductor for unusually long sequences, revealing
the musical interaction in this tantalizing
process of rediscovering a seemingly familiar
piece.

TEN FOR CARTER
In honor of Elliott Carter's one hundredth
birthday
Composer Elliott Carter has said, "What I do is
making America." The rich variety and dynamic
movement of American life is reflected in Carter's
music, and we've commissioned ten short piano
works from ten composers, celebrating his century
of innovation and creativity. Performed by
pianists Marilyn Nonken and Stephen Gosling, these
pieces pay tribute to Elliott Carter, "still
America's most promising young composer."
Ten for Carter includes music by Milton Babbitt,
Uri Caine, Jeffery Cotton, Alvin Curran, Jeremy
Gill, Jennifer Higdon, Jeffrey Mumford, Augusta
Read Thomas, Maurice Wright, and Ellen Taaffe
Zwilich.
All this, and a special treat! The virtuoso
members of the Network for New Music Ensemble
perform chamber music by Carter: his trio Con
Leggerezza Pensosa, an homage to Italo Calvino;
Steep Steps, for solo clarinet; Figment no. 2:
Remembering Mr. Ives, for solo cello; and excerpts
from 4 Lauds, for solo violin.
