March 2005
The President of Taiwan's stubborn push for
independence has made him China's Public Enemy
Number One. But how likely are these tensions to
escalate into a military conflict?
"The world cannot sit by idly to see an
undemocratic China remove the freedom, democracy
and rights of Taiwan's citizens," laments
President Chen Shui-Bian. But despite his best
efforts, Taiwan's international support is
dwindling. Only 25 countries still have diplomatic
ties with it. Everyone else recognises mainland
China. And since Chen came to power, China has
stepped up its rhetoric, making it clear it will
attack if it feels Taiwan is moving towards a
formal declaration of independence. "As everyone
knows, Taiwan is an inseparable part of the
Chinese territory," states one Chinese commander.
"The task of our military is to defend the
motherland and to ensure its territorial
integrity." President Chen's problems are further
compounded by the deep political divides in
Taiwan. Only half the country considers him their
legitimate leader. The others believe he is a
crook who staged a mysterious shooting the day
before the elections, when he was trailing badly,
to boost his support. And much as the Taiwanese
tend to see themselves as a sovereign country, few
want to go to war over it. After all, as one woman
says, "Mainland China is so big and we are so
small." Tags : journeyman pictures taiwan china dire straits independence |

I thought for a long time debating whether I
should post this video or not. I can see many
people, especially from mainland China, posting
hateful comments. Please, people, I totally
believe in freedom of speech, you can say anything
you like, whether you think TW is a country or
not, as long as you don't attack another peron
(+me) in harmful words. Through out the process of
making this animation, I realized it is hard to
convince a person's political stand point. Even
some TW think TW is a part of CH, and it is sad TO
ME. However, I still respect their opinion. But
what I came to realize in the end is the possible
war between TW and CH. I understand some of you
might say CH would never invade TW, but even if
there is only 1% possibility, it is still
worrisome. That is why I finally decide to post
this animation...hopefully I make the right
decision.
I personally think TW is a country, and I know
some of you is not going to be happy when I say
that. Here is some facts support my POV, so I will
get less hate mails:
1.Taiwan has its own culture, history, currency,
organization, government, land, law, president,
and a 23 million population.
2. Taiwan was a province of China that was lost to
Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War. The province
was returned in 1952 to Republic of China under
the Treaty of Peace between Japan and ROC.
ATTENTION, it's Republic of China (a.k.a. Taiwan),
not People of Republic of China.
3.If you search "UN" in wikipedia, then you can
read all the history about TW's position in UN.
Basically we were one of the 5 permanat members
until 1971 when our membership was "transferred"
to China. Well...how did it transfer...let's just
say the US was a part of it as well...but that's
another animation.

UN membership for Taiwan
End political apartheid!
As a sovereign nation that respects human rights,
freedom, and peace, Taiwan meets all the
requirements of UN membership. But the people of
Taiwan have no representation in the United
Nations for the past three decades.
Taiwan's 23 million people desire their nation to
become a member of the international community and
make greater contributions to world peace and
prosperity. The continued isolation of democratic
Taiwan does not reflect the reality and conveys
the wrong message to the Chinese government: it
stands in the way of mutual recognition between
China and Taiwan and of peaceful dialogue.
Therefore, we call on the UN to return to the
spirit of unity, to stand behind the principle
that we are all created equal, and to grant
membership to the peace-loving state -- Taiwan.
Europe's adherence to human rights and
democratisation has long served as an inspiration
to the rest of the world. Stipulated in the Treaty
of European Union, the principles of liberty,
democracy, respect for human rights and
fundamental freedoms not only govern the actions
of EU, but also are a priority when it comes to
external relations. We ask that you support a free
and democratic Taiwan by bringing it out of the
isolation imposed by China's totalitarian regime
and helping it to join all international
organisations, including the United Nations.
Thank you very much for your support of Taiwan!
