| Summer holiday trip 2007: Verzasca Dam, Ticino, Switzerland |

The Verzasca Dam is a 220 meter (722 feet) high
arch hydroelectric dam in the Valle Verzasca
(Verzasca Valley), Canton of Ticino, southern
Italian speaking part of Switzerland. Amie and me
came accross the dam during our first half of our
summer trip in August 2007 in Switzerland, when
entering the beautiful valley of Verzasca (Valle
Verzasca) located in the Locarno district of the
Canton of Ticino, Switzerland.
The dam was constructed between 1960 and 1965 and
forms the Vogorno lake (Lago di Vogorno), an
artificial reservoir. Made of concrete, the
structure dams the Verzasca River and retains over
100 million cubic meters of water. It is (as of
2007) the 25th tallest dam in the world.
The dam gained a certain popularity as it was part
of the opening scene of the 1995 James Bond film
Goldeneye, in which James Bond jumps off the top
of the dam in an attempt to gain access to the
heavily guarded Russian chemical weapons factory
below, reaching a speed of up to 120mph during his
eight-second freefall down the studded concrete
wall. Today, this is the biggest bungee jump in
the world.

La passione di Matthias Blättler per la
fotografia nasce dopo quella per l'acqua e per le
immersioni, che pratica da quando aveva 14 anni.
A 20 era già in possesso del brevetto
d'istruttore. Il suo obbiettivo era quello di far
conoscere il mondo subacqueo al maggior numero di
persone possibile. Questo poi sembrò non
bastargli, necessitava di un mezzo che gli
permettesse di estendere a un pubblico più ampio
le meraviglie del mondo sommerso. Ed ecco che le
sue due passioni, la subacquea e la fotografia,
fino a quel momento praticate in modo totalmente
divise, si uniscono in un tutt'uno.
Egli ci confida in un intervista, che oggi per
lui, gli é difficile pensare di effettuare un'
immersione senza macchina fotografica, che a tutti
gli effetti è diventata parte integrante della
sua attrezzatura subacquea. Crede nella fotografia
come testimonianza personale, come modo di
raccontare il mondo subacqueo. La macchina
fotografica è uno strumento relativamente
semplice che può essere utilizzato da chiunque,
la sfida consiste nel creare attraverso di essa
quella combinazione tra verità e bellezza
chiamata arte. "Amo fotografare l'acqua. Acqua e
luce, la relazione fra i due ! Però sovente vengo
ipnotizzato da un'irrefrenabile desiderio di
immortalare le creature che ci vivono. Fermare
degli attimi spesso irripetibili in un elemento
così affascinante mi stimola continuamente a
ricercare nuove emozioni."
Un servizio televisivo che, oltre a mostrare
un'altra visione del fiume, presenta un'attivitÃ
poco conosciuta: il Fotografo Sub. Il protagonista
del filmato spiega quel equilibrio
Natura-Arte-Tecnica che lo porta a realizzare veri
e propri capolavori fotografici. Assieme alla sua
compagna-modella si immergono nelle acque gelide
del fiume in Valle Verzasca in un paesaggi
suggestivi e quasi irreali.

| Bungee Jump Verzasca Abhishek |

Last Saturday (17.3.07) we went to a place called
Lucarno (3hrs by train from Zurich), close to the
Italian border.
And from there to the Verzasca Dam, to Bungee jump
off the top of it, which is 220m high (700+ feet).
It is supposed to be the highest structured bungee
jump place in the world, immortalized by the first
scene of the 007 movie Golden Eye....I
dontremember it either but its there...something
like 007 walking along the wall of the Dam....
The most exciting part was the moment just before
the jump and the rebound after you stretch the
elastic to the maximum the first time - in total
2.5 sconds and that costed me 100 Swiss franks per
second :) (CHF 255 in total) but it was worth
every bit of it.
They give a small training about how to come back
up after the jump is thru, switch on the 007 music
full blast on large speakers and then you put on
the gear, climb up to the podium, the elactic is
fixed to your feet and you jump. We were 4 who
jumped, 3 guys (Shashiraj, Shyam n me), 1 girl
(Surabhi), I was last. Some tourists who were in
that area also gathered around to witness the
jumps. The toughest part is to leave the handle
just before the podium and to stand at that vast
openness with your toes beyond the edge and wait
for the countdown 3..2..1..Go and you are
off...you keep going down a long long long way...
seems like forever (although it is just 2-3
seconds) then there is the temporary pause...
everything rushes into your head, your life
flashes in front of you (it was pretty blurred
though :) ) and then you start movin upwards.....
you look up to see your friends looking down at
you / whistling / shouting and clicking snaps.
They are too far away for you to recognise them or
understand what they are saying. There are a
couple of bounces after that, you fasten youself
to one part of the elastic, as tought in the
training. Wait for the hook to come down to your
eye level fasten that then signal up that u are Ok
and then a motor atop the dam pulls you up... then
you realize the height that you have covered.
Before reaching the top, once your friends /
collegues are visible some more shouting and
yelling some posting for the snaps and then you
are back to the podium where u started and down on
to the Dam.... some water, some more snaps and
many more prayers to thank The Almighty.

La Valle Verzasca è certamente una delle Valli
Ticinesi che ha saputo mantenere inalterati gli
aspetti più autentici delle vallate a sud delle
Alpi. Ubicata al centro dell'Europa a Sud della
Svizzera, la sua posizione geografica la sempre
resa difficilmente raggiungibile e priva
d'interesse per i conquistatori del passato;
questo le ha permesso di mantenere quell'aspetto
rurale e un po' dei tempi passati che tanto la
caratterizza. Geograficamente al centro del Ticino
è l'unica vallata del cantone attorniata
unicamente da territorio Svizzero.
A pochi Km dalla cittadina di Locarno e dalla
borgata di Ascona, mete di notevole importanza per
il visitatore della Svizzera Italiana.
