Enrique Granados y Campia
[1867―1916]
スペインの作曲家、ピアノ奏者。ア
ベニスとともに近代スペイン民族楽
を代表する。レリダに生まれる。バ
ルセロナでプホールとペドレルにピ
ノを学んだのち、パリでドゥ・ベリ
に師事した。1889年バルセロナに戻
、グリークのピアノ協奏曲と自作の
スペイン舞曲』でデビュー、その後
もピアニストとしてサン・サーンス
カザルスと共演するなど演奏活動を
発に行う一方、1901年には「アカデ
ア・グラナドス」を創立、後進の育
に努めた。
作曲家および演奏家としての名声
、1914年に自作を集めてパリのサル・
プレイエルで開いた演奏会で頂点に
する。このときの主要曲目は、彼の
表作であるピアノ組曲『ゴイェスカ
ス』2巻6曲（1911）であった。ゴヤの
から霊感を得たこの傑作は、16年に
ペラとして再構成され、第一次世界
戦のためニューヨークで初演が行わ
れ大成功を収めたが、その帰途、乗
合わせたイギリス汽船サセックス号
ドイツ軍の潜水艦によってイギリス
海峡で撃沈され、同年3月24日妻とと
にこの世を去った。彼の作品では、
ペインの風俗や男女の物語が独特の
香気をもって描かれている。その他
代表作はピアノ曲『スペイン舞曲集
2巻（1900）、オペラ『マリア・デル
カルメン』（1898）、歌曲集『トナ
ィーリャス（スペインの粋(いき)な
唄(こうた)集）』（1912）、『愛の歌
集』（1914）など。
Yehudi Menuhin
[1916―99]
アメリカのバイオリン奏者、指揮者
ニューヨーク生まれ。ルイス・パー
ンガーに師事、1924年サンフランシ
コ交響楽団と協演して注目され、以
「神童」として喧伝(けんでん)され
。27年パリ・デビューののち、同地
ルーマニアの名バイオリン奏者エネ
スコに師事。29年から本格的な演奏活
動を開始した。第二次世界大戦後、
時技術的な不調に陥ったが、バース
楽祭、ウィンザー音楽祭、メニュー
イン音楽祭などを主宰、また指揮に
手を染めるなど幅広く活躍、精神的
深さと強さを加えたことが独奏活動
復帰につながった。59年からアメリカ
を離れ、ロンドンを本拠に活動。85年
に英国籍を取得。1951年（昭和26）に
来日して以来、数回にわたって日本
訪れた。

Ruffo sings Verdi's Il Travatore
Titta Ruffo was a baritone at the time Caruso was
famous. It was said that he was the "Caruso of
baritones" but Caruso was more famous because,
well, tenors get all the chics. This is a rare
one-sided English-made HMV pink label. For a
90-year-old disc it is LOUD, especially on the
vv50 Victrola.

Here is a music player that is just the opposite
of an iPod. You wouldn't be able to carry it with
you on the bus. In fact, it would take at least
four people to lift it. But in 1928 this was a
great luxury: a phonograph that played your choice
of records continuously and then shut itself off.
It was ecologically smart, too, because it did not
use an amplifier. The only thing electric about it
was the turntable motor and a tiny electric lamp,
so you could read the record labels. You will hear
Fred Waring's record of "Hay Foot, Straw Foot
(Charleston Time)" and Arden & Ohman's recording
of "Feeling I'm Falling" from "Treasure Girl."
