| Virus devastates vineyards |
 |
Vineyards in Pune have been hit by a deadly virus
owing towhich imports of grape plants have been
adversely affected. The viruses, detected as
'leafroll' and 'rugose', have reportedly come to
India through imported varieties of grape plants.
The viruses have spread to various other varieties
of plants in grapevines Experts maintain that the
imported varieties of plants are responsible for
the spread of virus in Pune, Nasik and other

| Allegro Vineyards - Pennsylvania |
 |
Located in Brogue, PA., Allegro Winery has the
ironic distinction of being located in a dry
county (athough Allegro was grandfathered in, the
apparent purpose of the county fathers was to keep
other wineries from coming locating there).
Originally started in 1978 by John and Tim Crouch,
a winery was built in 1980, and a tasting room in
1981.
Join us as we talk with current owner/winemaker
Carl Helrich about his old vine Chardonnay and
Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1973, and the
challenges of growing wine in humid conditions.
The challenge here is that the mid-Atlantic
climate is quite humid, making the grapes stay
warmer through a shorter growing cycle. This gives
the vines about triple the susceptibility to plant
disease, and its not uncommon for vineyards to get
sprayed 15 or more times during the season against
various types of rot. European-styled is the best
way to describe the wines here, with good acids
and slightly lean fruit. Priced from $12-25, Carl
bottles most as varietals: Pinot Grigio,
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, and Merlot - mostly
from Estate or local vineyards. We also find the
ubiquitous sweet/seasonal wines here as well,
though Carl frankly admits that sales of the party
wines are what subsidizes his love for and ability
to work with vitis vinifera. Tags : Wine Allegro East Coast Vineyard Pennsylvania |

| Schramsberg Vineyards - Napa Valley |
 |
he origins of Schramsberg Vineyards began in 1862,
when immigrant Jacob Schram bought some acreage on
a hillside in Napa Valley. He was a barber at the
time, but had lofty intentions of growing grapes
and making wine in this wild area. By the 1880s,
Jacob had quit barbering and was making 12,000
cases of award winning wines - mostly Riesling,
Hock, Burgundy and Chasselas. Jacobs death in 1905
and prohibition resulted in a series of sales over
the next 50+ years, until finally the property was
bought by Jack and Jamie Davies in 1965.
Join us as we follow Schramsberg winemaker Craig
Roemer through caves filled with bottles of
sparkling wines, and see how riddling is done.
Then, its on the watch the disgorgement on the
bottling line and finally a sabering of the
bottle.

| Cayuse Vineyards - Among The Stones |
 |
Some might say Christophe Baron had rocks in his
head to plant Syrah in 1997 in Washington's Walla
Walla Valley. But actually, it is the vineyards of
Cayuse that are loaded with rocks. As with most of
his colleagues, Christophe feels the answer to
great wines is to work hard work in the vineyard.
But, the weather is a tough variable here in
Southeastern Washington. To keep the vines from
freezing during the harsh winter, Christophe must
bury the vines with rocks and dirt. And, since
grafting is a problem because of the cold winters
(grafts would have difficulty surviving), all of
his vines are all on their own rootstalks.
Join us as we listen to this fascinating vigneron,
and his take on working among the stones to make
great wines from the Walla Walla Valley.
