* ABBA had a lot of problems to perform Waterloo
in Eurovision.When they arrived to Brighton,
London where the Eurovision Song Contest was going
to be celebrated, Stig had an interview with an
executive of the British music publisher. When he
heard the song, he was horrified, and he said they
will never have the chance to win.Further, many
people bet that Olivia Newton-John was going to
win. On the rehearsals, the track where the song
was recorded didnt work and a woman from Sweden
started to criticize them, because she said that
ABBA had stolen pieces of some songs. Anyway, they
continued working.When they finished their
presentation, people said that they were not going
to win because their song was not in their native
language, but when they won, everybody had to stop
criticizing.ABBA never gave up, thats why they
have reached such a great place in the musical
world.

tuvo una entrevista con un representante de la
empresa publicadora de musica en Inglaterra, y él
al escuchar la canción, dijo que nunca tendrÃan
la oportunidad de ganar.Todos apostaban que Olivia
newton-john iba ganar. En los ensayos, la pista
donde tenian grabada la cancion no funcionó y una
mujer sueca los acusó de haber robado algunas
partes de otras canciones.De todos modos ABBA
siguió trabajando.Cuando acabaron la
presentación mucha gente gente afirmaba que no
ganarian porque no haber cantado la cancion en su
lenguaje nativo(sueco), pero cuando ABBA
ganó,todos tuvieron que dejar de criticar.ABBA
nunca se rindió, por eso es que han llegado tan
lejos en el mundo de la música.

Waterloo was recorded in Dec 1973. Abba chose it
over Hasta Manana to be the Swedish entry for
Eurovision 1974, as it was a happy uptempo rocking
song with rhythm and energy, and all the group
sing. Stig Anderson took a demo tape on holiday
to the Canary Isles. Stig agonised for a week to
find the right title, then produced the original
Swedish lyrics in a few hours, constructing a
story of Waterloo as a metaphor for a girl
surrendering to the love of a suitor. The rest is
history, it was the first time Sweden had won
Eurovision. The song rapidly became a worldwide
hit after this huge success in Brighton in April
1974, reaching no. 1 in England on May 4 1974.
