| Steven Levitt: the Freakonomics of inner-city gangs |
 |
http://www.ted.com Steven Levitt is an economics
professor at the University of Chicago and the
best-selling author of Freakonomics. In this talk,
filmed at TED2004, he goes inside an inner-city
gang to examine economic principles at work in the
real world. (Recorded February 2004 in Monterey,
CA. Duration: 22:00) Tags : TEDTalks |

| Clifford Stoll: 18 minutes with an agile mind |
 |
http://www.ted.com Clifford Stoll could talk
about the atmosphere of Jupiter. Or hunting KGB
hackers. Or Klein bottles, computers in
classrooms, the future. But he's not going to.
Which is fine, because it would be criminal to
confine a man with interests as multifarious as
Stoll's to give a talk on any one topic. Instead,
he simply captivates his audience with a wildly
energetic sprinkling of anecdotes, observations,
asides -- and even a science experiment. After
all, by his own definition, he's a scientist:
"Once I do something, I want to do something
else." Tags : Clifford Stoll ted tedtalks technology science experiments web culture education |

| Seth Godin: Sliced bread and other marketing delights |
 |
http://www.ted.com In a world of too many options
and too little time, our obvious choice is to
ignore the ordinary stuff. Marketing guru Seth
Godin spells out why, when it comes getting our
attention, bad or bizarre ideas are more
successful than boring ones. And early adopters,
not the mainstream's bell curve, are the new sweet
spot of the market. Tags : ted tedtalks godin marketing |

| Hans Rosling: Watch the end of poverty |
 |
http://www.ted.com In a follow-up to his
now-legendary TED2006 presentation, Hans Rosling
demonstrates how developing countries are pulling
themselves out of poverty. He shows us the next
generation of his Trendalyzer software -- which
analyzes and displays data in amazingly accessible
ways, allowing people to see patterns previously
hidden behind mountains of stats. (Ten days later,
he announced a deal with Google to acquire the
software.) He also demos Dollar Street, a program
that lets you peer in the windows of typical
families worldwide living at different income
levels. Be sure to watch straight through to the
(literally) jaw-dropping finale. Tags : rosling trendalyzer ted tedtalks statistics |

| Jeff Hawkins: Brain science is about to fundamentally chang |
 |
http://www.ted.com To date, there hasn't been an
overarching theory of how the human brain really
works, Jeff Hawkins argues in this compelling
talk. That's because we still haven't defined
intelligence accurately. But one thing's for sure,
he says: The brain isn't like a powerful computer
processor. It's more like a memory system that
records everything we experience and helps us
predict, intelligently, what will happen next.
Bringing this new brain science to computer
devices will enable powerful new applications --
and it will happen sooner than you think. Tags : ted tedtalks |

| Stephen Petranek: 10 ways the world could end |
 |
http://www.ted.com - Stephen Petranek reveals the
question that occupies scientists at the end of
the day (and the beginning of happy hour): How
might the world end? He lays out the challenges
that face us in the drive to preserve the human
race. Will we be wiped out by an asteroid?
Eco-collapse? How about a particle accelerator
gone wild? Tags : ted tedtalks end of the world |

| Dan Dennett: Can we know our own minds? |
 |
http://www.ted.com Philosopher Dan Dennett makes
a compelling argument that not only don't we
understand our own consciousness, but that half
the time our brains are actively fooling us. As he
puts it, our bodies are made up of 100 trillion
little robots, none of them with an individual
consciousness. So what makes us feel we have one?
Or that we're in control of it? Dennett's hope is
to show his audience that "Your consciousness is
not quite as marvelous as you may have thought it
is." He uses thought experiments and optical
illusions to demonstrate to the TED audience that
even very big brains are capable of playing tricks
on their owners. Tags : philosophy ted tedtalks |

| Steven Pinker: A brief history of violence |
 |
http://www.ted.com - In a preview of his next
book, Steven Pinker takes on violence. We live in
violent times, an era of heightened warfare,
genocide and senseless crime. Or so we've come to
believe. Pinker charts a history of violence from
Biblical times through the present, and says
modern society has a little less to feel guilty
about. Tags : ted tedtalks |
