The native Amerindian population of Cuba began to
decline after the European discovery of the island
by Christopher COLUMBUS in 1492 and following its
development as a Spanish colony during the next
several centuries. Large numbers of African slaves
were imported to work the coffee and sugar
plantations, and Havana became the launching point
for the annual treasure fleets bound for Spain
from Mexico and Peru. Spanish rule, marked
initially by neglect, became increasingly
repressive, provoking an independence movement and
occasional rebellions that were harshly
suppressed. It was US intervention during the
Spanish-American War in 1898 that finally
overthrew Spanish rule. The subsequent Treaty of
Paris established Cuban independence, which was
granted in 1902 after a three-year transition
period. Fidel CASTRO led a rebel army to victory
in 1959; his iron rule has held the regime
together since then. Cuba's Communist revolution,
with Soviet support, was exported throughout Latin
America and Africa during the 1960s, 1970s, and
1980s. The country is now slowly recovering from a
severe economic recession in 1990, following the
withdrawal of former Soviet subsidies, worth $4
billion to $6 billion annually. Cuba portrays its
difficulties as the result of the US embargo in
place since 1961. Illicit migration to the US -
using homemade rafts, alien smugglers, air
flights, or via the southwest border - is a
continuing problem. The US Coast Guard intercepted
2,810 individuals attempting to cross the Straits
of Florida in fiscal year 2006.

| Castro's Cuba - Cuba |
 |
August 2007
If his ill health permits, in less than two years'
time Cuba's Fidel Castro will celebrate half a
century of communism in his tiny Caribbean island
nation of Cuba, but with the 80-year-old leader
still looking pretty frail like Cuba's economy,
many are asking whether his stubborn Marxist
revolution will survive his inevitable passing.
"He created a totalitarian state that has
absolutely nothing to do with Socialist ideals",
claims dissident Oscar Chepe. "What we have is
state capitalism run by a group that controls
everything". Cubans are effectively forbidden from
owning their own businesses and cannot access the
internet or stay in the country's hotels. But not
all Cubans are disaffected. Castro has enlisted
40,000 'trabajadores sociales' to ensure the
future of the revolution. Today, they're replacing
energy-inefficient fridges. "It's the new
revolution -- an energy revolution", explains one
girl. Tags : Cuba Love Health Permits Communism Ecponomy Marxism Havana |

Musica Cubana de la decada de 1930-1940
Cuban music of the 1930s
Photographie: Collection Jaime Jaramillo.
Un an

LAWRENCE TIBETT stars in film CUBAN LOVE SONG
(year 1931)
This review from www.imdb.com
"Lawrence Tibbett had a varied and distinguished
career at the Met. In "Metropolitan," he got to
sing operatic arias. The music here is schmaltz,
though he delivers it with great beauty.
He strides around the sound stage as if on a
theatrical stage -- but that's not a problem. The
movie itself is fairly silly.
Jimmy Durante is somewhat restrained as his
military buddy. And, lucky guy! He has romances
with two lovely ladies. Karen Morley is the kind
woman back home. And that famous Cuban Lupe Velez
is the peanut-seller he meets while in the
service.
Velez is allowed little of the fieriness and
tantrums that marked her "Mexican Spitfire" series
and most other movies I've seen her in. She
appealing.
I won't give anything away. (It's far from a work
of art or a suspenseful movie, anyway.) However,
the plot does seem a Hollywood riff on "Madame
Butterfly.""

MGM had hopes of turning Metropolitan opera singer
Lawrence Tibbett into a movie star, but Cuban Love
Song brought this two-year project to an end.
Tibbett plays a cocky marine stationed in Havana,
who devotes his attention to voluptuous Cuban
peanut vendor Lupe Velez. He serenades her with
"The Peanut Song" several times in the course of
the film, and Velez falls madly in love. But
Tibbett is the "love 'em and leave 'em" type, and
when World War One breaks out he drops Velez like
a hot tamale and heads for Europe. Ten years pass:
Tibbett returns to Cuba, only to discover that
Velez has died...and then he meets a cute
9-year-old "orphan" boy whose favorite tune is
"The Peanut Song". Cuban Love Song is highlighted
by an uproariously graphic "castor oil" gag
involving supporting actor Jimmy Durante. ~ Hal

| Tambor for Chango in Matanzas - Cuba |
 |
http://www.earthcds.com/caribbean/cuba/cuba-fuerza
.shtml "La Fuerza del Tambor" offers a rare look
inside the Matanzas Afro Cuban religious
community, capturing a piece of history that is in
danger of being lost. This DVD features public
religious celebrations, drumming demonstrations,
and interviews with elders of the Lucumí Santeria
and Palo Mayombe traditions.
Chapters include never-before-seen footage of a
unique set of Lucumi bembe drums, called Bembe
Macagua, and a rare sequence of Palo Mayombe songs
played with bata drums. It also includes more
traditional examples of the power of the drums to
communicate with the African deities known as
Orishas. The film was recorded live in the home
of Alfredo Calvo, widely regarded as the most
knowledgeable Santero and Palero in Matanzas.
In addition to the eight segments of live public
drumming celebrations and the two drumming
demonstrations, Calvo and several other respected
members of the Matanzas Afro Cuban community are
interviewed on such topics as the relationship
between Palo and the sacred bata drums and the
birth of the Bembe Macagua drums.
Subtitles are included for all of the Lucumí and
Palo songs, many of which are no longer sung
anywhere in Cuba except Matanzas. Interviews are
in Spanish with English subtitles.
